Baby Gear Group 2023 Impact Report and Year End Summary: Helping Families Save Money and Live Sustainably

At Baby Gear Group, our mission is to help families gear up for their babies in a way that prioritizes sustainability and community.

We help families save money, reduce mental load, and remove clutter from their homes.

We help the planet through an efficient reuse and sharing model within local communities, which keeps items out of landfills and reduces unnecessary manufacturing.

We love win-win-win scenarios!  By renting and borrowing from our baby gear library, families can use the gear they need for a fraction of the retail cost.  This not only saves them money, but also reduces waste and environmental impact.

Customer Impact

Baby Gear Group helped hundreds of local families save money vs buying retail!  The average family saves $592!  While we guarantee 50% savings vs buying retail, the average savings is actually a whopping 82%!

  • 2023 Average Dollar Amount Families Saved: $592

  • 2023 Average Percentage Families Saved: 82%

Renting gear also provides an easy way to get rid of gear and reclaim your floor space, which let’s be honest, is really a reclamation of your mind space too!  No more efforts needed to list, sell, or even donate.  If you’re a member, we even pick up from you so it just magically disappears!  In 2023, we saved families 466 cubic feet of total clutter space.

  • 2023 Clutter Eliminated: 466 cubic feet

Sustainability Impact

In 2023, Baby Gear Group's rental library helped our community make a significant dent in waste and emissions.  By sharing and reusing gear, we divert gear and packaging waste from landfills.

  • 2023 Total Material Diverted from Landfills: 3,868 lbs

    • 2023 Gear Diverted from Landfills: 3,588 lbs

    • 2023 Packaging Diverted from Landfills: 280 lbs

We also eliminate the need for these items to be manufactured in the first place, which eliminates pounds of material waste and emissions from the manufacturing process.

  • 2023 Eliminated Pounds of Manufacturing Waste: 3,868 lbs

  • 2023 Eliminated Manufacturing Carbon Emissions: 8.77 tons CO2e

Baby Gear Group’s 2023 carbon emissions was 5.24 tons CO2e.  By reusing gear, we’re greatly reducing their emissions impact!

  • 2023 Carbon Emissions Generated (Scopes 1, 2, and 3): 5.24 tons CO2e

  • 2023 Carbon Emissions Efficiency Factor (Generated / Eliminated): 0.60

The 2023 Emissions Efficiency Factor correlates well with our records indicating that, in 2023, we averaged 1.8 turns per item.  In other words, an item is used approx 2 times per year.  For anyone who thinks this number sounds low, remember our primary value is providing rentals for longer term, at-home use.  This matches well with the manufacturing emissions savings factor being 0.60 or almost halved!

Let’s compare to 2023 vs 2022:

  • 2022 Carbon Emissions Generated (Scopes 1, 2, and 3): 4.80 tons CO2e

  • 2023 vs 2022 Change in Emissions per Revenue Dollar: -8.8%

It’s expected to see our emissions increase as we grow and undertake more business activities to serve families. However, it’s great to see our emissions per dollar decrease as it shows we’re becoming more emissions efficient!

We're proud to play a role in reducing waste and promoting a more circular economy!

Community Impact

We believe in hosting great events for our community to promote sustainability and community!  In 2023, we hosted 5 free clothes swaps, to encourage clothing circularity.  Everyone loved the swaps, and we’ll continue to host more in 2024.

  • 2023 Number of Community Events: 9

  • 2023 Number of Attendees: 255

In addition, Baby Gear Group values giving to the community in the form of clothing & item donations, monetary donations, volunteer hours, and subsidized rentals.

*Comment on assumptions:

Weight and volume metrics are gathered from the top 20% of items rented in the year. Metrics are gathered from sources online including retail listings and brands' websites. Where metrics are missing packaging weight is approximated at 5% of item weight, which is a rule of thumb of the industry. An average item weight and packaging weight per item is calculated, which is then multiplied across all turns.

For 2023, the average item weight is 7.7 lbs, the average packaging weight is 0.6 lbs, and average volume (in folded configuration) is 1.0 cubic feet per item.
